Meet Jay!
Give this November and your donation will be doubled!
Jay is an 18-year-old with a love for cooking. He and his mum Evangelina turned to Northcott for support when he was diagnosed with Achondroplasia. After accessing therapies like occupational, speech and hydrotherapy, Jay started improving his communication skills and building his confidence to travel independently.
Through Northcott’s Life Skills program on the Gold Coast, Jay plans cooking activities with his friends. These activities are more than a fun class – they are opportunities for Jay to engage in social groups and participate in meaningful tasks.
Today, whether he’s baking sausage rolls with friends or learning to travel independently by public transport, he relies on spaces that are accessible and equipped with the right resources to support his learning.
Thanks to travel training with his occupational therapist, Jay is now confidently using public transport, whether he is heading to the cinema or an appointment.
“Coming to Northcott has helped in many, many ways. We’ve been coming so long that they really know us, and how hard it can be for us. It's only me and Jay, but we’re doing really well," says Evangelina, Jay's mum.
The spaces Jay and his friends use are critical to their development. With your help today, we can enhance our Places & Spaces ensuring individuals with disability have all they need to achieve their goals and shine brightly.
Your donations will help Northcott to upgrade our spaces, creating:
- New soft fall areas to ensure accessible play.
- Flexible outdoor program zones where participants can explore cooking and gather in purpose-built spaces.
- Inbuilt obstacles that encourage movement and physical engagement.
- Physiotherapy breakout spaces that are comfortable year-round, and have the capacity to support more people with a broad range of needs.
For Jay, spaces like these would mean even more opportunities to connect with his friends, build his skills, and enjoy his passions.
