Lloyd’s passion for libraries

02 Aug 2023
This week is Library and Information Week and to acknowledge the week we’d like you to meet Lloyd who loves libraries! Lloyd is a participant in our Life After School program, and is currently completing work experience at the Northcott Library under the guidance of our librarian, Judi.
During the program, Lloyd received coaching, mentoring and work experience opportunities to help him build the skills needed to gain employment. Lloyd says,

“I have learned how to write and build a resume, what to say and not to say in a job interview, and how to behave and work with people in a workplace.”

Lloyd also got the opportunity to gain valuable work experience at the Northcott Library to help him achieve his dream of becoming the State Librarian at The State Library of NSW.

“I’ve enjoyed libraries since I was in primary school. The librarian gave me a couple of jobs at lunchtime, and I helped her out with those. And then when it came to high school, I got bullied quite severely by a couple of older boys, a whole group of them in fact. I sought the library as a refuge to escape them and the librarian started giving me jobs. After I left school, I really aspired to become a librarian.”

“I've learned a lot under Judi’s direction. I am starting to get a hang of how shelving, filing, cataloguing, and archiving are done. I also found the motivation to enrol myself in Certificate 3 course at TAFE course,” adds Lloyd.
Before Lloyd joined the program, he was unsure about how looking for a job  worked.

“I am clearer about what I should be doing to get a job. This program has made it all coherent for me. I now know how to write a resume, to search jobs on websites such as Seek, Indeed and Jora. I never knew that before, even though in school we did learn about that sort of thing, but I just really didn't understand it. But now I do after Life After School,” says Lloyd.

Lloyd is keen on progressing his studies in Library Information Services while trying to secure a job in council libraries.

“I am currently trying to find a job in the council libraries. In a couple of weeks, I’ll move on to Certificate 4 and would like to complete a diploma next year. Once I finish that, I will start to consider a university degree as that will broaden my chances of securing my dream job.”

Great work Lloyd!

We hope you achieve your dream and look forward to having bragging rights in 2050 to say the State Librarian of NSW was once a participant of one of our programs.
